Response to: "What can we do?” Letter to the Editor, Oceana Herald Journal, January 2019
The real question is: "Why are those who previously supported a physical barrier on the United States southern border now determined to shut down the government to prevent its construction?"
Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Diane Feinstein and even Senator Barack Obama spoke eloquently about the need to fund and build a border wall, and they cast votes in Congress to do just that. Their speeches pointed to the movement of criminals, drug traffickers, weapons traffickers, sex slave traffickers, and even terrorists across our borders.
Time has proven Pelosi, et al, correct: the vast majority of heroin and fentanyl arrive in the U.S. via of the southern border; thousands of underage children are trafficked (what do regressives spout about the need for gun control? “If but one child is saved...?”); tens of thousands of illegal aliens have been convicted of crimes that warrant imprisonment in the federal system, to say nothing of state prisons and local jails; and well over 100 billion tax dollars ($100,000,000,000) are spent annually to subsidize those who cut in line to get into this country. How is that fair, either to citizens who pay the tab or to those who come legally?
Unlike past presidents and congresses, President Trump is doing what he said he would do. This is precisely why he was elected. PROMISES MADE. PROMISES KEPT.
Declaring that President Trump is illegitimate and "not my president" only demonstrates Trump Derangement Syndrome. To undermine the validity of the U.S. Constitution emphasizes the extent of that derangement. Our system of government under this Constitution has given its citizens more freedom, more opportunity, and more wealth than any other system in the history of mankind. Failure to appreciate that shows only the poverty of regressives. Failure to overhaul and streamline our current legal immigration system shows only the betrayal by our elected officials.
Our Constitution and adherence to it are why so many people want to be here. If we disregard that and our national sovereignty, we will become as dysfunctional as the countries these immigrants have left.
